The ACT Science section contains complicated graphs, thick passages, and a timer. There are 40 questions to be answered in just 35 minutes. Therefore, it is important to answer questions quickly and correctly. The following are 8 strategies that will help you work more efficiently and score better.

8 Tips to Increase Speed in the ACT Science Section

1. Test Structure

This section of the ACT Science test has:

  • 6-7 passages that each have accompanying questions.
  • A passage of data representation, research summary, and conflicting viewpoints.
  • Questions that require respondents to interpret information as opposed to specific scientific knowledge.

Understanding these structures can enable you to predict the types of questions that will be asked, therefore enabling you to save a lot of time.

2. Read the Passage Halfway and Pay Attention to Graphs and Tables

The majority of questions are asked using visual data instead of long text. Therefore, instead of reading the entire passage, look for key trends, variables, and labels in graphs and tables. Find and remember the patterns and relationships so that you are able to retrieve the information quickly.

3. Find Important Words in the Questions

Look for key terms in the question that lead you to a certain figure, variable, or trend. Underlining these important words will help you know what to keep an eye on, therefore saving you time and preventing you from rereading the passage unnecessarily.

4. Start With The Easiest Questions

Some questions take more resources than others. Self-explanatory data interpretation questions should be answered first before moving to step reasoning questions. This will undoubtedly give you the best value for your time.

5. Remove Wrong Options Fast

If you are not sure of the answer, eliminate the options. Many answer choices have extreme exaggerations, meaningless information, or blatant contradictions within the data. Even just narrowing down your options increases your chance at getting the answer right quickly.

6. Prepare For Conflicting Viewpoints Passages

Conflicting viewpoint passages are longer than other passages. To avoid wasting too much time, do the following:

  • Read through each viewpoint and highlight differences that stand out.
  • Capture important points and not details that do not matter.
  • Remember the disagreements, not the details.

7. Make Timed Practice Sessions

Practicing with a time limit will help you gain speed over time. Use official ACT practice tests, but apply a firm time limit. Approximately after 5 minutes on each passage, you should have gone through all the questions so you won’t have to rush at the end. For study session monitoring, use Controlio. It is an ideal monitoring application.

8. Avoid River Of Thoughts And Stay Calm

A single question should not take you too long to answer. Make an educated guess, and push forward. Fixating on an answer will greatly hinder your ability to answer questions that could be easier for you.

Increasing your speed on the ACT test strategies require reading, smart elimination techniques, and consistent practice. By implementing these tips, you’ll enhance both accuracy and efficiency, leading to a higher ACT score.
