Staying somewhere a bit more off the beaten path is the way to go if you’ve come to Italy. After scouring the map I chose to stay in Trieste, as it gave me a view of the Trieste Gulf without the expense and crowds of the bigger cities.
When I was there, I found many options for day trips from Trieste, Italy. My favorite was the private water tour I took of Venice. I checked off a couple things from my bucket list on that one. If you’re not familiar with the area, getting a guide is the way to go.

Take a Private Gondola Voyage of the Venice Shore
No matter what you do, I highly recommend you see Venice. It’s too close to not go. I took a private gondola tour to see this mind blowing shoreline. After cruising the water for a bit, we parked the boat and took off on foot.
We walked to the San Marco Square and were taken aback by all the gothic architecture. I checked off “seeing a holy place” off my bucket list when we saw where they keep the remains of Saint Mark.
Sip Adult Grape Juice and Tour Cividale del Friuli
Nestled on the high banks of the Natisone River, you can get lost in the wine tastings of Cividale del Friuli. To me the area felt like it was right out of a movie, full of intricate charm. I’m going to say that the best wine tastings I’ve had are always around stunning rivers. Something about the unique and rich soil quality.
Cividale del Friuli, I’ve found, is rich in history. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was my favorite building to see, followed by the Lombard Temple of Santa Maria in Valle. Having a chance to speak with the locals is definitely the best part of this tour.
